Steve Pilgrim
Liverpudlian Steve Pilgrim, Paul Weller’s drummer for the last ten years, has recently carved out his own body of his work as a guitarist and singer-songwriter with five studio albums to his name. On his last two albums and tours, Steve has been joined by Danny Thompson, the revered double bassist, who was Bert’s colleague in Pentangle, and has collaborated with folk legends like Richard Thompson, Nick Drake and John Martyn, great jazz men such as Humphrey Lyttelton and Tubby Hayes as well as Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison, and Kate Bush.
Magic Strings
written by Steve for Danny
Steve Pilgrim and Danny Thompson met up in early April 2019, before their ‘Magic Strings’ tour dates, and recorded this song for Bert at Paul Weller’s famous Black Barn studio in Surrey. Danny said ‘I’m very happy to do something for the Foundation, Bertie was my mate’. Steve said that the song he wrote, ‘Magic Strings” inspired by collaborating with Danny seemed very apt to play for Bert.
With years of international touring, Steve Pilgrim (born 1979), has performed and shared the stage as drummer, guitarist and singer-songwriter, with Noel Gallagher, Roger Daltrey, Kelly Jones, Emeli Sande, Villagers, Lucy Rose, Graham Coxon, Robert Wyatt and Corinne Bailey Rae, to name a few. To be able to duet with Danny Thompson (born 40 years before) had been a real pleasure for Steve. Danny’s playing is never obvious and always innovative, which fits perfectly with Steve’s acoustic agility. Danny says: “As long as I have my hands on my upright bass, I am the luckiest bloke in the world.”
