Johnny Marr
Johnny Marr has been a prodigious and feted musician from his earliest life-changing work with The Smiths, through The The, Electronic, The Cribs and now his solo work. He’s often spoken on Bert’s huge influence when a teenager dreaming of becoming a guitarist. He notes “Without Bert Jansch, rock music as it developed in the ’60s and ’70s would have been very different.” Invited to play on Bert’s Crimson Moon album in 2000, they became friends and collaborators until Bert’s death in 2011. “Bert was very dear to me and he will always be an inspiration not only as a musician but as a man. Bert actually made the term ‘cool’ mean something.”
A to Z
A piece by Johnny Marr for Bert Jansch
Johnny says:“I am honoured to send off this guitar in Bert’s name. He was an inspiration and a great man. I wanted to do something personal, so I’ve played a guitar song of mine called ‘A to Z’ as it was something Bert and I used to play together for fun. I always think of him when I play it. and he will always be an inspiration not only as a musician but as a man. Bert was very dear to me. He actually made the term ‘cool’ mean something. He would’ve loved the idea of this guitar making a journey – Godspeed.”
