Rory Butler
Young Scottish singer-songwriter Rory Butler grew up in Edinburgh where his father ran a recording studio in the cellar. Little wonder then that music became Rory’s world. He has opened for the likes of folk legend Richard Thompson, Paul Weller, Lucy Rose, Eric Bibb, Ross Wilson (Blue Rose Code) and John Paul White (The Civil Wars). His first single ‘Black and Blue’ was included on Apple Music’s Best of the Week and Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists. His well received album Window Shopping was written and recorded between his hometown Edinburgh and London.
Poison
A piece by Bert Jansch
Though Rory has been inspired to write his own songs, he felt drawn to play ‘Poison’ from Birthday Blues for this project. He says: “I already knew how important Bert was to the music scene that I loved when I spotted his debut album in a little record shop in Dumfries. When it went on – it was a bit of a shock. It just made me want to play my guitar all the time. Really imaginative songs. So aggressive on the strings and yet so carefully melodic. So, separate yet together. The marriage of guitar and voice that Bert exudes is everything in my own songs, and Bert Jansch had a big impact on that.”
