Ewan McPherson
Ewan lived in Edinburgh for 14 years and spent a lot of time playing music in one of Bert’s old haunts Sandy Bells pub. He also worked for Stoneyport Associates which booked Bert’s Scottish gigs and so was regularly in touch with Loren, Bert’s wife, organising publicity and promotional materials. Ewan plays in a band called Salt House, which is influenced by Bert’s music including Pentangle.
The Low Call
A piece by Ewan McPherson for Bert Jansch
“Bert’s approach to music has always been an inspiration, and even though he used to play a lot of folk and roots clubs I think his music encompasses a lot more genres than that, he just happened to play acoustic guitar. I think that attitude gave him a lot of freedom to do whatever took his fancy. Certainly, listening a lot to Bert & John albums brought many images and ideas to my mind when I first got tuned onto their sound.
“A couple of Salt House’s reviews have come back with comments like ‘hints of Pentangle’. We didn’t set out to be a tribute band so it must be that Bert’s music is in the great melting pot, long may his legacy continue to bring a lot of happiness with his timeless and beautiful sounds.”
